"reserve bank annual" and "not safe for work" book launches »
On Friday 27 November, two contributors to Public Address, Emma Hart (who writes the "Up Front" column) and David Haywood (who writes the "Southerly" column), released their new books in style at the appropriately named Grand Hall in the New Zealand Parliament Buildings.
Emma's book, "Not Safe For Work", is "a collection of essays on sex, sexuality, girl-geekery and the internet, lightly sprinkled with humour and marinated in biting sarcasm."
David's book, "The New Zealand Reserve Bank Annual 2010", "sets out to explain 'the dismal science' [economics] in a way that kids between the ages of four and six can really understand. It answers all the hard questions: What is counting? What is money? Why is it wrong to be poor? Why are rich people so alluring and wonderful?"

urban golf (22 august 2009) »
According to Wikipedia, urban golf is "seen by many as social commentary on the nature of golf and its traditional opinions and attitudes". Even though there are definitely golf clubs in New Zealand that subscribe to the "traditional opinions and attitudes" (snobbish class attitudes, if you will), access to golf in New Zealand has never been a problem for anyone of any social standing: for every pompous club, there is one that more resembles a Working Man's Club that just happens to have a hundred acres of grass and trees outside. Consequently, urban golf probably doesn't have the social commentary here that it might command in the UK or USA. But it has slowly caught on here because it just might be fun.

zombie march (hallowe'en 2009) »
31 October means Hallowe'en. And Hallowe'en means ghosts, ghouls and goblins. And zombies. Showing remarkable organisational capabilities for the mindless undead, a bunch of zombies took to the Wellington streets on Hallowe'en night, only to find their progress impeded by the fearless Lord Byron and his trusty cadre of zombie hunters. Will the hunters' courage be enough to save the metropolis from the shambling ravenous horde?
