According to Wikipedia, urban golf is "seen by many as social commentary on the nature of golf and its traditional opinions and attitudes". Even though there are definitely golf clubs in New Zealand that subscribe to the "traditional opinions and attitudes" (snobbish class attitudes, if you will), access to golf in New Zealand has never been a problem for anyone of any social standing: for every pompous club, there is one that more resembles a Working Man's Club that just happens to have a hundred acres of grass and trees outside. Consequently, urban golf probably doesn't have the social commentary here that it might command in the UK or USA. But it has slowly caught on here because it just might be fun.
